What happens to student subscriptions after graduation?

Most student subscriptions don't stop when you graduate. They switch to the regular price automatically. Spotify moves you to an individual plan, Apple Music renews as an individual subscription, and Prime Student renews into a full paid Prime membership. Note each renewal date now and decide which ones you'll keep.

PlanHow long the discount lastsWhat happens after
Spotify Premium Student12-month periods, reverify each year; up to 4 periodsMigrates automatically to a paid individual plan (Spotify terms)
Apple Music studentUp to 48 months; reverify yearlyRenews automatically as an individual subscription (Apple Support)
Prime StudentUp to 4 years or until you graduateRenews on its anniversary date into a full paid membership, unless you cancel (Amazon Prime Student terms)

The discount ends quietly. The charge doesn't.

The FTC's consumer guide on free trials and auto-renewals tells people to check card statements for charges they didn't expect and to keep a copy of any cancellation request (FTC, page updated December 2025). That applies to student plans as much as free trials.

The 3-question graduation check

1When do you graduate?
2Which student plans do you have?

Spotify prices are its U.S. list prices. For the others, type the prices from your own receipts.

3After graduation, you want to…

Worked example: Spotify Student at $6.99 becomes $12.99 a month, a $6.00 jump. That's $72.00 more a year, or $155.88 a year in total instead of $83.88.

A May graduate

Picture a student who signed up for three student plans in her first September. She graduates in May and starts a job in July. Nothing happens in May. In September, two plans renew at full price within a week of each other, and the third already switched when she skipped the yearly verification email. None of it is a scam; it's all in the terms. It's just easy to miss when your address, card and inbox are all changing at once. This is an illustration, not a real person, but the quiz above does the same date math.

Honest limits

The quiz estimates the switch date as the first plan anniversary on or after your graduation month, capped at four years from the start date for the three named plans. Spotify and Apple can switch earlier if you miss a yearly reverification, so treat the date as "no later than", and check your account for the exact renewal date.

Prices change and vary by country. We checked Spotify's U.S. prices in November 2026; Apple Music and Prime prices are left for you to enter because we'd rather you use the number on your own receipt.

Where MoneyShield fits

MoneyShield, which we make, keeps these dates on your iPhone so the switch doesn't surprise you. Here is what each screen does.

MoneyShield add subscription form with price, billing cycle, next charge date and remind-me options
Step 1Add the plan and its next chargePrice, billing cycle and next charge date, with reminders the same day, 1, 3, 7, 14 or 30 days before.

MoneyShield deadline types including free trial, subscription, return, refund, warranty and bill
Step 3Choose the deadline typeSubscription, free trial, return, refund, warranty or bill. Scheduled price changes and cancel-by dates are supported too.

How it works in 3 steps

  1. Add each student plan

Use your quiz result: plan, price now, full price, and the switch date as the next charge.

  2. Get the reminder in time

Renewal, cancel-by and follow-up reminders arrive before the charge, not after.

  3. Decide, one plan at a time

Keep, Review Later or start cancelling. The Cancellation Assistant points you to the official route and keeps your confirmation number.

No account, no login, no bank connection, no email scanning. MoneyShield starts with 7 days of Full Protection with no payment required, then moves to the free plan automatically. Plus is optional: $3.99 a month, $24.99 a year or $59.99 one time in the U.S.

Pick something else if you want charges found for you automatically: MoneyShield never connects to your bank, so you add plans yourself. And if you only have one student plan, a calendar reminder on the renewal date does the job for free.

Student plan questions

Does Spotify Premium Student end when I graduate?

Spotify's terms say students who reach the maximum or don't reactivate their student status migrate automatically to the single-user paid plan at full price. Each discount period lasts up to 12 months, with up to three more after the first.

What happens to Apple Music student after graduation?

Apple says that when you're no longer a student, or after 48 months, the subscription automatically renews as an individual Apple Music subscription.

Can I cancel before it switches?

Yes. Cancel before the renewal date and you keep access until the end of the paid period. For App Store billing, Apple asks you to cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal.

Know the date before the charge

Add your student plans once and get a reminder before each one switches to full price.
